Sustainability Report

Ninety per cent! That’s how much our scope 1 CO2 emissions will fall after the transformation of our processes at Port Talbot. And we will on average be halving the emissions of the products we sell, supporting our customers’ decarbonisation strategies.

Ninety per cent! That’s how much our scope 1 CO2 emissions will fall after the transformation of our processes at Port Talbot. And we will on average be halving the emissions of the products we sell, supporting our customers’ decarbonisation strategies.

You can find these encouraging facts and many more in our latest Sustainability Report which has just been published, summarising two years of significant change for Tata Steel – and for UK steelmaking.

Highlights include a timeline of our transition period: from our agreement with the UK government in September 2023 for jointly investing £1.25 billion in electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking, to the planning permission milestone of February 2025 that enabled construction work to begin on Europe’s largest EAF. The report also looks ahead, with graphics which visually explain our lower CO2 steelmaking of the future.

Sustainability Report

‘The Sustainability Report covers a wide spectrum of our activities,’ says Paul Wheeler, Head of Sustainability for Tata Steel UK. ‘As well as detailing how we’ve improved emissions and enhanced biodiversity on our sites, it shows how we’re working with our customers to pass on CO2 savings and develop sustainable solutions.’

Carbon emissions savings are being passed on right now through Tata Steel UK’s carbon insetting scheme, Optemis® Carbon Lite. Some of the sustainable solutions featured in the report range from our ultra-thin-gauge electrical steel laminations to Catnic SolarSeam® our PV-ready roofing material. There are details of 13 new product innovations including our high containment barriers solutions for highways safety, and aerosol cone and can body product launches in packaging that support downgauging. You can also read about our collaborative work with institutions like Imperial College London to accelerate the new generation of steel products.

There’s a strong people focus throughout, demonstrating how we have consulted and engaged with the workforce and helped each other to stay safe during the transition period, along with pictures capturing our involvement with the community, from inspiring young people to lead healthy lives through our Tata Kids of Steel events, to providing Christmas lunches for care home residents.
