Can we do it differently

‘I keep asking: can we do it differently?’ Meet Ralph Calmes, our new Chief Commercial Officer, who has been getting to know our customers.

Ralph Calmes took up his position as Chief Commercial Officer in January. New to the steel industry, he has hit the ground running: visiting our sites, having constructive meetings with customers – and asking lots of questions.

I enjoy a challenge, and that was a good reason to join Tata Steel UK. The company is itself facing many challenges, not least how to become a long-term sustainable and profitable company. But I could see, from how it moved rapidly to being a reroller, that this is a company that can get things done. Its commitment to investing in the Electric Arc Furnace was also hugely impressive. Helping it to transition into a new and sustainable way of offering steel to the market is an exciting prospect. Having worked in industries from automotive and mining to speciality chemicals, I was keen to experience the renowned Tata Group culture. I’ve found it very welcoming and I must thank my predecessor, Anil Jhanji, for a supportive handover and for his work over the past few years.

The advantage of being new is that you can ask all the stupid questions. Sometimes this challenges colleagues to think again, or to question whether the way that things have always been done is the best way. It often results in an answer that is unexpected, and allows everyone to explore new methods. I expect questions back, along with an understanding that things do need to change. We can’t just keep doing what we always do. Having said that, there is such deep expertise here. It’s very reassuring to be surrounded by knowledgeable colleagues, some of whom have been here for 40 years, as they know things I don’t necessarily need to know.

My biggest questions have been around understanding the market environment and how Tata Steel adds value. Thank you to all the customers I have met so far who have been very welcoming. You have answered my questions with British friendliness and reserve, even about the issues that concern you such as delivering on time in full. I expect the politeness may not last unless we up our game on delivery, which I am keen to address. But I could see that you realise that our investment in the EAF will be a gamechanger and will help you in your sustainability journey.

From my meetings with customers, I believe you understand that Tata Steel UK is trying to protect the industry. Everyone needs a strong player to support industry recovery, and I hope the new trade environment that we will see in a few months will enable this revival to happen. Now it is down to the political decision-makers. I know everyone wants certainty, but sometimes uncertainty can offer us a  valuable lesson too. Focusing on what I can manage, and being prepared for whatever scenario is going to land, has been a good rule for me.

I’m really look forward to continuing the dialogue and meeting more of you – but beware, I may ask a lot of questions!
