Comflor® and Optemis® Carbon Lite combine to win carbon reductions in prestigious City of London project.
‘Construction projects in central London have a real drive to decarbonise,’ says Barry Rust, Head of Market & Business Development at Tata Steel’s Building Systems UK. ‘So delivering an 85% reduction in Scope 3 emissions was a significant win.’
He is referring to the 97,500m2 Grade A office development at 2 Aldermanbury Square in the City of London, where Tata Steel supplied 35,000m2 of ComFlor® composite steel floor decking, The carbon reductions were won by a combination of clever design and the use of our carbon intensity reduction scheme Optemis® Carbon Lite.
A steel carbon reduction strategy for the building was formulated by fabricator William Hare working closely with construction and consulting firms Bovis and Arup as well as supply partners. With metal decking typically accounting for around 20% of the carbon in the steel supply, the company turned to Tata Steel for solutions.
The first step was to optimise the design, and our Building Systems UK specialists, working with Arup, succeeded in an 8% weight reduction, bringing a carbon saving of 80 tonnes of CO2e.
To drive further emissions reductions, Tata Steel’s Optemis® Carbon Lite solution, offering a lower CO2 intensity through the supply chain, was also specified. This independently certified route lets customers choose the CO2 intensity reduction they need.
ComFlor®, fully certified under the Responsible Sourcing Framework Specification BES 6001, helps towards obtaining credits under the BREEAM Building Certification Scheme, while Tata Steel’s Environmental Product Declaration Programme generates bespoke EPDs for the ComFlor® range.
‘There is ComFlor® in nearly every office tower in London,’ says Barry. ‘Besides the carbon reductions, it has practical advantages compared to alternatives such as concrete planks. Nesting beautifully on the back of a lorry, it can be easily transported into city centre locations, causing less disruption to traffic and local communities and offering a lower carbon footprint in transportation.’
- Optemis® Carbon Lite is used across the construction sector by customers looking to reduce their Scope 3 emissions as well as by the construction equipment and automotive sectors.
- ComFlor®, one of the most advanced composite steel floor decking solutions is available in a range of nine profiles.
