Schoolgirls from Neath Port Talbot have celebrated completing Tata Steel UK's Girls Get Set programme, designed to inspire more young women to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Changing perceptions of engineering
Throughout the programme, the girls have developed their confidence, leadership and problem-solving skills through practical STEM activities, while discovering the wide range of career opportunities available in engineering.
For some, the experience has completely changed their perceptions of the industry.
One participant said:
"I never really thought about going into engineering because I thought it was for boys, but now I think everyone can do it."
Inspiring the next generation
Laura Rowles, Talent Acquisition & Development Advisor at Tata Steel UK, explained why programmes like Girls Get Set are so important.
"There's a massive gap in the STEM industry between females and males. We're really hoping to show them what opportunities are out there and the types of careers they could go into."
During the 2025/26 academic year, 44 girls aged 12 to 14 took part in the programme across Neath Port Talbot and Shotton, helping to inspire the next generation of women in STEM.
