Many people are interested in the progress we are making at Port Talbot, and we were delighted that Prime Minister Andy Burnham chose to visit the site as part of his UK listening tour in late August. The PM spent three hours talking to the teams involved in the most significant transformation in UK steelmaking for a generation. He was welcomed by Tata Steel Group CEO and MD, TV Narendran, and Tata Steel UK CEO Rajesh Nair, and accompanied – on this, his first scheduled visit to Wales – by the new Secretary of State for Wales, Stephen Kinnock MP, and Deputy First Minister of Wales, Sioned Williams MS.
Over the course of the summer we have welcomed customers to Port Talbot, who have also been excited to see the move to EAF steelmaking at first hand.
Those attending this summer’s Steelmaking Transition Day for the building industry were able to see the difference EAF steelmaking will make to their business. For Iain McBurnie, reviewing supply chain emissions for infrastructure consulting firm AECOM, it was an important insight into sustainability credentials for future projects.
Ellen Willis, Head of Sustainability at Chetwoods Architects, highlighted how the monumental environmental and sustainability benefits will be backed up by all the data the supply chain crucially needs for future projects. ‘We can see that this is a commitment to sustainability, but also a commitment to industry.’
This wider perspective was shared by Steven Alexander, Managing Director at Marq Logistics, who commented that it was exciting to see the pace at which the UK is progressing towards low emission steel.
For many, viewing the massive site up close and personal made the biggest impression. ‘You can watch CGI and flyovers, but seeing the sheer scale is mindblowing!’ said Rebekah Hutchinson from Benniman Construction Group Ltd. Engaging with the people doing the work was also key for Abby Foster from Ridge and Partners LLP. ‘Everyone was so knowledgeable and helpful – and it was all really clean!’
Visitors to the site have come from far and wide, including India, Japan, and very recently a team from a major food brand in the Netherlands also visited.
Customers interested in seeing the project are encouraged to talk with their Account Manager to discuss possible arrangements.
