Jo Evan Building Systems UK Managing Director

Where have you experienced the impact of someone giving to you? How did it shape your journey?

I have had the privilege of working alongside many great people, but there is one in particular who took time to mentor and coach me, recognising my potential long before I did!  They understood my strengths; my energy, my drive and my determination, and were intentional about guiding me towards opportunities that would stretch and develop my leadership skills.

They genuinely shaped not just my career, but me as a person. It’s not only their guidance that has made a difference, but the authenticity they live and role model every day. Watching leaders who show openness, integrity and a real willingness to connect has influenced the kind of leader I aspire to be. Their time, their stories, and the belief they invested in my growth have played a meaningful role in building my confidence and shaping the leader I am today.

What is something you wish more people understood about the power of supporting women?  Specifically around support, allyship and growth.

Supporting women is about true allyship, creating space, asking for their perspective and ensuring their voice is heard.  A former leader in particular always made sure I had a seat at the table and asked for my opinion rather than directing. When I notice a voice not being heard, I instinctively step in to create that space. It’s not something I do because others are watching it’s something I feel genuinely compelled to do.

What are you proud to have achieved in your in your career?

I’m proud of my longevity here and my journey from early commercial years into my leadership role as Managing Director. Throughout that time, I’ve continued to grow by being unafraid to challenge things, try new approaches and bring energy, agility and forward thinking into the team. That “dare to try” mindset and relentless drive has enabled us to test ideas locally that have gone on to be adopted across the wider business, something I’m really proud of.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned that you feel compelled to pass on to others?

I’ve learned that when you’re passionate and driven, it’s easy to want to take everything on yourself. That enthusiasm comes from a good place, but trying to do it all can mean you’re not able to give each piece of work the focus and attention it deserves.

Over time, I’ve learned to pause, reflect, and decide whether the piece of work is better delegated. Being more intentional with my energy not only improves the quality of what I deliver but also creates space for others to contribute and grow.

What positive changes do you hope to see in the workplace for women in the next few years?

In both steel and construction markets that are heavily male orientated, we do have women across our operational and technical teams and we continue to focus on growing representation across all areas of the business. A more balanced workforce brings broader perspectives, stronger teams, and a more inclusive culture.

Initiatives like the GirlsGetSET programme are an important part of this. By working with local schools to inspire girls aged 11–15 to explore STEM careers in their own community, we’re offering mentorship while also building future talent pipelines and strengthening our community relationships.

What advice would you give to women who aspire to leadership?

Women aspiring to be leaders should believe in themselves, I have come to realise that my drive, energy, resilience, and determination has been instrumental in my leadership journey. Have confidence in your own ability and back yourself, but remember that the people aspect is what truly defines great leadership.- building relationships, showing empathy, and inspiring others will take you further than anything else!

And finally, what would you tell your younger self?

I’d tell my younger self not to do anything differently, however to take better care of herself along the way. To remember that ambition is a strength, and that a work life balance isn’t a luxury; it’s what allows you to grow, to stay healthy, and to truly enjoy the journey.
