Woman of steel's success at Wales STEM Awards

Since joining Tata Steel UK as a Higher Apprentice in 2021, Lead Analyst, Georgia Cox, has been trailblazing in more than one male-dominated industry.

From her feature on the Women of Steel podcast, to her work as an Apprentice Ambassador, her spearheading of the Women’s Lab Society and success as Miss Port Talbot 2023, Georgia has achieved a lot at the tender age of twenty-one.

After being shortlisted at the 2024 Wales STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Awards, it was therefore, no surprise that she would take home a trophy of her own.

The annual awards ceremony recognises innovators and businesses for their outstanding contributions and progress within the sector. The event also addresses important challenges faced by the industry such as the skills shortage and the need for greater diversity and opportunities.

This year, the ceremony brought together finalists from across Wales to compete in 15 competitive categories, ranging from STEM Start-Up of the Year to Innovation in STEM.

It was Georgia who bagged the “STEM Rising Star” Award for her remarkable contributions to engineering and STEM leadership at a young age.

Commenting on her achievement, Georgia said: “I take great pride in having led such innovative projects at Port Talbot steelworks, as well as my contributions to improve areas such as quality, safety as well as, encouraging, championing and creating a supportive environment for women in steel.

“While a lot of hard work has gone into getting me to get to this point in my career, the incredible support from my mentors and colleagues in the industry has been absolutely invaluable.”

Technical Training Advisor, Tata Steel UK, Toni Davies added:

“During her short time with the company so far, Georgia has achieved a remarkable amount and continues to be a positive influence for young women across the steel sector.

“Her enthusiasm is infectious. She is a fantastic case study of what can be achieved through a higher apprenticeship programme, showing everyone that no matter their gender, or background, there is a place for them in STEM.”

Co-Founder of Wales STEM Awards, Liz Brookes, added: "It’s incredible to see the impact that our winners and finalists are having.

“These individuals are not just excelling in their fields but are also paving the way for the future of STEM in Wales."
