Tata Steel marks Richard Burton centenary with continued support for iconic community race

Tata Steel UK is proud to continue its sponsorship of the Richard Burton 10k – one of Wales' most iconic and well-attended road races– set to take place in Cwmafan in Port Talbot on Sunday 2 November 2025.

This year’s race holds particular significance as it commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Welsh actor, Richard Burton.

At the heart of the event is Shaun Tobin, a former employee at Tata Steel UK who was recently awarded an MBE for his exceptional dedication to sport, charitable fundraising, and community engagement across Port Talbot and South Wales. For more than 25 years, Shaun has directed the Richard Burton 10k bringing the event from a local race into an annual celebration of the community in South Wales.

Now in its 44th year, the Richard Burton 10k is a longstanding tribute to three young local men who tragically lost their lives in 1981. The race has brought together runners of all ages and abilities, raising over £250,000 for grassroots charities and community initiatives since its inception.

Each year, hundreds of Tata Steel employees join in as runners and volunteers, making the race a true community event.

Speaking ahead of this year’s event, Shaun Tobin said:

“Every year, I’m reminded that the Richard Burton 10k is far more than running- it’s a moment for community and celebration across Port Talbot. I’m proud to continue directing an event that brings people together, year after year.”

Burton’s granddaughter, Charlotte Frances Burton said:

We are thrilled as the Burton family to be celebrating the great Richard Burton 10k race in Neath Port Talbot. Thank you so much to Tata Steel UK, Runtech and the amazing local community for making this race happen this year and every year."

The centenary race has also attracted the attention of actor Harry Lawtey, who portrays Richard Burton in the biopic Mr Burton, released this year. In a supportive video message online, Lawtey said:

“…It’s a fantastic event, which is run by some brilliant people that raises an amazing sum of money for local organisations and families in times of need…Please do get down there and support.”
