That work includes both the deconstruction or demolition of redundant assets, and the groundworks needed to prepare for new construction projects.
This morning / afternoon, with the support of expert contractor partners, Thompsons of Prudhoe, Tata Steel has safely and successfully demolished the HAA material handling structure on the south side of the steelworks. The area will be cleared, and the materials recovered for recycling.
Additionally, the company will shortly begin the piling work associated with the Consteel (conveyor that feeds scrap into the EAF) element of the £1.25 billion investment in Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking at the Port Talbot site.
Piling activities will commence w/c 16 March for an expected 15-week period.
A Tata Steel spokesperson said: “While we do not envisage the pre-cast piling work will impact the local community, given the location of the activity near to the BOS plant, residents may hear some new noises from the site. Please be assured that we are committed to managing and mitigating any potential noise.”

The spokesperson continued: “We continue to make significant progress on the project. Our new contractor village is now operational and is expected to host up to 1100 Tata Steel UK employees and contractors at the peak of the project.
And in a recently released video, the company has shown the work to partially infill the BOS lagoon that is approaching completion, which will be critical preparation for the movement of scrap and other materials around the site.
