Tata Steel UK's new People Behind the Project series shines a spotlight on the people delivering Project Invictus – the transformation of Port Talbot through the construction of a new Electric Arc Furnace.
Introducing people behind the project
The construction of a new Electric Arc Furnace at Port Talbot marks one of the most significant transformations in Tata Steel UK's history. Known as Project Invictus, the project will help secure a more sustainable future for steelmaking in the UK.
While the scale of the transformation is significant, it's the people behind it who are making it happen. That's why Tata Steel UK is launching People Behind the Project – a new video series showcasing the colleagues working across Project Invictus.
From engineers and technical specialists to project teams and subject matter experts, the series explores the diverse careers, skills and experiences helping to deliver one of the UK's most significant industrial transformation projects.
Each episode offers an insight into the people behind the project, their career journeys, their day-to-day roles, and what inspires them to be part of the future of steelmaking.
Episode one: Meet Robert Hargreaves
The first episode features Robert Hargreaves, a Human Factors Specialist working on Project Invictus.
Human factors engineering combines psychology, ergonomics and engineering to design systems that are safe, intuitive and effective for the people who use them. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, Robert helps ensure human factors are embedded throughout the design and development of the new Electric Arc Furnace and its supporting infrastructure.
In the episode, Robert shares how he discovered this specialist field, from studying product design to completing a master's degree in ergonomics and human factors. He also explains what attracted him to Tata Steel UK and why being involved in Project Invictus so early in his career is a unique opportunity to develop his expertise while contributing to a project of national significance.
Robert also discusses the importance of putting people at the heart of engineering design, ensuring the systems and equipment used every day are safe, intuitive and effective. It's an often unseen but essential part of delivering a project of this scale.
