Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens MP, visited Tata Steel’s world class galvanising facility at Llanwern, Newport this week, and re-iterated her government’s support of the UK steel industry in a meeting with the site’s Trades Union representatives.

In advance of the impending announcement of the UK Government’s steel strategy, Jo said: “We are determined to secure the future of UK steelmaking and to see Welsh steel at the heart of it.”

Works Manager Craig Phillips, said: “At a time when government policies such as trade defences and energy costs are central to the sustainability of our industry, this visit from the Secretary of State is extremely welcome and shows that steel is still a strategic industry in the UK.”

Reg Gutteridge, Chair of the Llanwern multi-union committee added: “As our local MP, Jess Morden is a regular visitor to the works, she knows our challenges well, and frequently stands up in the House of Commons to state our case – she is a huge supporter of ours.

“To have a member of the cabinet visit site is a real boost for the workforce here. It was a great opportunity for us to press the case for urgent action on UK and EU quotas and tariffs to protect our industry and jobs. This government has put in place a green steel fund and a steel strategy – our job is to make sure they meet the needs of the industry and our workers.”

Craig continued: “When people visit us, see how advanced our technology is, and hear how important Llanwern is for so many people and communities, as well as being a supplier to a hugely significant customer base across the UK, they start to have a real understanding of the fundamental importance of our industry for UK manufacturing.”
