Welsh Government Calls for Urgent Action on Steel

The First Minister of Wales, Eluned Morgan, has issued a strong call for urgent UK Government action to support the steel industry in Wales, during a period of significant pressure.

The First Minister, has made a statement emphasising the vital role steel plays in the UK and Welsh economies and highlighted the challenges facing the sector, including high energy costs, global overcapacity and growing trade barriers.

With Tata Steel UK’s transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking underway, the Welsh Government stressed the need for a stable and supportive policy environment. Key priorities include ensuring robust trade protection measures after June 2026, securing access to both the EU and US markets, and addressing long‑term issues such as electricity pricing, procurement and steel scrap supply.

The First Minister said that the  Welsh Government is continuing to work closely with unions, industry and UK Government, and is urging the UK Government to publish its long‑awaited UK Steel Strategy as a matter of the “utmost urgency” to provide clarity and confidence for workers and industry.

Tim Rutter, Director of Communications & Public Affairs at Tata Steel UK, welcomed the statement: “It’s encouraging to see the Welsh Government continuing to champion the needs of the steel sector at such a critical time. Their call for urgent clarity on trade measures and the UK Steel Strategy echoes what our workforce and communities need – stability, certainty and a policy framework that supports a sustainable future for steelmaking in Wales. We look forward to continued constructive engagement as the sector navigates this period of transition.”
