Gold Standard for Tata Steel’s Trostre Packaging Site

Tata Steel UK’s packaging steel site at Trostre has once again achieved the highest possible food packaging safety rating.

The world-class operation, based in Llanelli, South Wales, has secured an AA+ grade under the BRCGS Global Standard for Packaging Materials for the third consecutive year.

The rating followed another rigorous, unannounced audit, placing the Trostre site among an elite group of trusted suppliers to the global food industry.

The BRCGS Global Standard is recognised worldwide as a leading benchmark for food packaging safety and quality management, and achieving the top AA+ grade under unannounced audit conditions demonstrates a commitment to operating at the highest standards every day, not just when inspections are expected.

As part of the audit, Trostre was required to demonstrate full product traceability, tracking material from steel coil through manufacturing processes to finished product delivery.

The site successfully completed the end-to-end traceability exercise within a four-hour window, highlighting the robustness of its systems, controls and operational discipline.

James Davies, Works Manager at Tata Steel UK’s Trostre site, said the result gives customers complete confidence in the company’s processes and people.

“This certification is absolutely critical for our business and for our customers,” he said. “It proves that our systems, controls and culture stand up to the most intense scrutiny, even when the audit is unannounced.

“Signing up to unannounced audits – which can happen with as little as 20 minutes’ notice – demonstrates the confidence of our teams and their willingness to challenge themselves every day. We don’t prepare for audits – we operate at that level all the time.

"The award isn’t just a prize; it’s a mirror.”

With its third consecutive AA+ certification, Trostre strengthens Tata Steel UK’s position as a trusted, critical partner in the food and beverage supply chain, underpinned by excellence in food packaging steel and the highest standards of safety, quality and traceability.
