Composite steel floor decking is one of the most efficient forms of structural flooring, which is both economic in use and sustainable over the life of your project, including end of life.
Building Systems UK, a Tata Steel enterprise, have been producing ComFlor® structural steel flooring for over 40 years. The latest generation of decking profiles support further sustainable and efficient structural solutions. Whether it is from a transport perspective, or availability of low CO2 emissions decking products – ComFlor® can support your project priorities.
2025 is a key year as it represents 70 years of operations for Building Systems UK, nurturing innovation and delivering customer excellence. 2025 is no exception - with Building Systems UK recently announcing a suite of innovations and new product launches for their ComFlor® family. The new ComFlor® products reduce the total cost of ownership, whole life carbon and increase the efficiency of installation.
Innovation
These ComFlor® innovations are the biggest change to the ComFlor® structural steel flooring family for 25 years. With enhanced finishes, including metallic coating and paint solutions, driven by decades of development and testing, providing a broader family of ComFlor® solutions for a wider range of applications and project needs.
Supporting these innovations is the Building Systems UK technical team who oversee in-house testing and can provide a full range of structural design services and calculations, including fibre reinforcement and rebar design, fire performance calculations and CO2 calculations for slab design.
Sustainable solutions
The expanded ComFlor® range enhances durability in use, extending the life of the product to first maintenance, and reducing the whole life carbon and total cost of ownership. Backed by unique bespoke Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) offerings – that provide a life cycle assessment at product specification level – for a detailed environmental report not available anywhere else in the market.
Durability and Guarantees
The new expanded product range is designed to deliver longer life with peace of mind that multi decade guarantees are available across much of that range. The Building Systems UK technical team can support here with metallic coating design life estimations as well as support on acoustic and vibration calculations, and review of bespoke project details and durability guidance.
The new members of the ComFlor® family
ComFlor® FD+ with Colorcoat Prisma® pre-finished steel
Our ComFlor® FD+ composite steel floor decking with Colorcoat Prisma® is a solution that has been developed and optimised for floor deck applications. The Colorcoat Prisma® finish provides an exceptionally durable solution for onerous environments and is backed by our multi decade guarantee. Available in both ComFlor® 51+, 60 & 80 variants for use in up to C5 environments and coastal applications.
This premium finish option for floor deck applications uses innovative manufacturing technology to create an optimised and robust pre-finished steel product which meets the highest European standards for corrosion and UV resistance (Ruv5 and RC5+ as per BS EN 10169:2022). The coating system uses the unique and proven Galvalloy® metallic coating by Tata Steel, offering a combination of increased barrier and sacrificial protection when compared with conventional Hot Dip Galv (HDG) coatings and provides unrivalled corrosion protection.
RoofDek MZ140 and ComFlor® MZ140 & MZ310
MagiZinc® is an innovative replacement for conventional galvanised steels. It provides superior corrosion protection even in harsh environments.
MagiZinc® was developed over ten years ago by Tata Steel. During that time, it has been thoroughly evaluated in renewable, automotive and construction applications, and has accrued years of practical use in a wide range of environments.
Available in ComFlor® MZ140, with a 140g/m² MagiZinc® coating weight and ComFlor® MZ310 with a 310g/m² MagiZinc® coating weight, the finishes have a lower whole life carbon performance when compared with standard Z275 galvanised coating.
MagiZinc® is a 3-phase system that uses the electrochemical properties of zinc in combination with the favourable properties that aluminium and magnesium offer, to cathodically protect the steel.
The addition of magnesium helps to increase the corrosion resistance significantly when compared to standard galvanised coating in standard salt spray testing (ASTM B117). This increase in performance is attributed to the dramatic change in microstructure of the coating where there are three phases present. The three phases are: primary zinc dendrites, binary eutectic, consisting of Zinc and Dizinc Magnesium, and ternary eutectic, consisting of Zinc and Dizinc Magnesium and Aluminium nodules. The 3-phase microstructure allows for the formation of new oxide layers and complex corrosion products, which are not found on standard galvanised coating.
Our MZ products delivers improved corrosion performance across our ComFlor® range. Our ComFlor® MZ310 is a premium product delivering enhanced durability over the whole life of your project and is available with a multi-decade guarantee.
ComFlor® 80 with precision crimped closed ends
ComFlor® 80 is the big sister to ComFlor® 60 with the same round shoulder combined profile technology applied to an 80mm deep trapezoidal shape to offer longer spans. Now available with the option of precision crimped closed ends which are produced online during the profile forming operation. ComFlor® 80 with precision crimped closed ends provides excellent acoustic performance and fire protection, and the closed ends eliminate any requirement for filler blocks.
Whilst some designs will remain with our ComFlor® 80 offering, the precision crimped closed ends option does have a number of benefits, including:
• Faster simplified installation on-site, due to elimination of filler blocks.
• Closed ends prevent and control the loss of concrete.
• Easy to install on pre-studded beams.
• No end caps required and no need to worry about relative stud and deck position.
• Enhanced acoustic and fire performance.
• Cost savings on labour and materials.
As closed ends are produced off-site, this reduces the requirement for hot work on-site with pre-studded beams requiring no end caps and removes the requirement for on-site stud welding also allowing post galvanised beams.
Precision crimped closed ends also give a more aesthetic finish and are suitable for all forms of construction, particularly ideal for single span projects.
Precision crimped closed ends also provide optimum shear stud performance – the closed ends leave sufficient concrete around the studs to eliminate reduction factors and the position of the stud in relation to the deck troughs is not important.
The Building Systems UK technical team can support your project by providing acoustic and structural calculations, designs for ‘holes’ in the slab, and construction detail advice.
