Supporting the reduction of emissions, while increasing safety
Truck and bus chassis
For truck chassis we have high-strength lightweighting solutions such as Ympress® or XPF® steel, which are excellent for roll forming longitudinal beams. For safety impact zones Tata Steel offers AHSS, UHSS, dual phase or complex phase products designed to absorb energy. Our Hybox® TT high-strength tubes are used as rear bumper beams to protect against rear impact. Leading bus companies use our structural hollow sections (Hybox TT), which offer chassis light weighting solutions.
Truck cabins
For the cabin we have outer panel product solutions such as Serica® and MagiZinc® that offer excellent surface appearance and greater corrosion protection. MagiZinc® also offers benefits during production by lowering tool pollution during pressing.
The protection cage of the cabins are often strengthened by using our AHSS steel grades such as our DP800-GI HyperForm®.
Ready for the next generation of transportation equipment
With our aim to support a more sustainable world, we contribute to the development of an Hyperloop system in collaboration with Posco.
The opportunities are already there for city trucks and buses to become CO2 neutral, using Hilan® battery solutions with a higher power to weight ration than pounch cells.
For electric motors we offer our Hi-Lite electrical steel products. In the quest to move to more electric driven vehicles, manufacturers choose Tata Steel's HILUMIN® (our world's leading nickel plated material to produce electrical vehicle batteries) for city trucks and buses.
For traditional drive chains our boron manganese tubular products offer lightweight drive-shafts, whilst delivering the required fatigue performance.

Tipper trailers
Tipper linings are built to last; with our Valast 450 (available up to 2000mm width) lasting performance is ensured.
Trailer chassis
Chassis builders benefit from the tight dimensional tolerances we offer on our Ympress (S355MC-S960MC) range, offering reliable automated production and ability to light weight. Tata Steel's Hybox 700MH tubes are used as underrun protection parts and provide the safety needed for other cars in case of an accident.
Accredited steel for bulk transportation
In the shipbuilding market we offer various ship building grades meeting Lloyd and DNV-GL requirements. Our ability to provide cut to length sheet up to 2000mm width and 13,000mm length make ship market grades suitable for ship builders and subcontractors into this market.
Our high-strength steel and normalised grades are used to lightweight railcars, whilst our Valast 450 is suitable for freight wagons transporting raw materials due to its wear resistant properties.

AHSS (CP800-1000 UC/GI and DP800-1000 UC/GI)
For safety impact parts in truck cabins our CP800-1000 UC/GI and DP800-1000 UC/GI) combine high strength with formability needed to deal with emergency impact, thus reducing the stress of the impact by absorbing energy.
Serica and MagiZinc Auto (DX54-57, BH)
Tata Steel offers a full range of full finish galvanised products (up to 2000mm width), suitable for great looking outer parts of your truck. Our top product Serica is designed with extra low waviness, which improves the reflection of light and makes outer parts look even better.
Our MagiZinc products use a zinc magnesium coating offering better corrosion resistance at similar coating thickness. MagiZinc is available for structural parts and for outer panels.
Ympress (S355MC-S700MC) and XPF (XFP800-XPF1000)
Our high-strength steel grades are used in the chassis of most large trailer and truck producers in Europe and allow for efficient processing (welding, cutting and profiling) due to their lean chemistries. Our case study below demonstrates how Ympress S700MC is used to produce the lightest trailers in Europe.
XPF800-1000 is suitable for high strength parts with complex shapes (with punched holes) due to the high HEC values and good elongation properties, like wheel suspension parts.
Valast (Valast 450)
Transporting stones, cement and other abrasive material, requires extremely tough materials, that are designed to last. Our Valast 450 is an abrasion resistant material that allows for lightweighting in kipper trailers and rail wagons. Due to the low CEV value it is easy to process and weld and the width up to 2050mm allows to optimise designs and minimise the numbers of welds required.
Tubular products (Hybox TT S355-700MH and boron manganese grades)
Our Hybox TT (S355-700MH) products are used in many transportation vehicles, but we are most proud of the role it plays as underrun protection tubes, avoiding cars sliping under trucks or trailers in case of a collision.
Our boron manganese tubes help to lightweight driveshafts, while withstanding the fatigue demands coming from the constant motion of transport vehicles.
HILUMIN® (trucks/buses)
Buses and city trucks are changing towards becoming electric at a very fast rate. Our Hilumin material offers specially coated material used in the battery packages of cars, trucks and buses.
Shipbuilding (Grade A, B)
We offer DNV-GL and Lloyds certified shipbuilding grades up to 2050mm width, which are available with double certificates for structural steel grades in order to remove the need to keep double stock.
Coretinium
For box trailers and double deck trailers Coretinium offers steel for side walls and floor dividers. Coretinium consists of two colour coated sheets glued together with a honeycomb structure, which creates strong, lightweight panels with great stiffness.
